Some ideas from thermodynamics

چکیده
The branch of physics called thermodynamics deals with the laws governing the behavior of physical systems at finite temperature. These laws are phenomenological, in the sense that they represent empirical relations between various observed quantities. These quantities include pressure, temperature, density and other measurable parameters that define the state of a given system. Thus, in discussing magnetic systems, e.g., the variables might include temperature, magnetization and external magnetic field; in discussing elastic systems we might want to use temperature, stress and strain as defining variables. Thermodynamics of biological processes.
There is a long and rich tradition of using ideas from both equilibrium thermodynamics and its microscopic partner theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. In this chapter, we provide some background on the origins of the seemingly unreasonable effectiveness of ideas from both thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in biology. After making a description of these foundational issues, we tu...
متن کاملThermodynamics – Past, Present and Future
We begin with historical remarks on the basic contributions to thermodynamics and statistics with some bias to scientists working in Berlin as Helmholtz, Clausius, Nernst and Einstein. We underline the key role of thermodynamic ideas in the scientific revolutions in the 20th century. Further we discuss several recent applications to natural, evolutionary and informational systems, exotic applic...
متن کاملStructure formation and generalized second law of thermodynamics in some viable f(R)-gravity models
We investigate the growth of matter density perturbations as well as the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in the framework of f(R)-gravity. We consider a spatially flat FRW universe filled with the pressureless matter and radiation which is enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon with the Hawking temperature. For some viable f(R) models containing the Starobinsky, Hu-Sawicki, Exp...
متن کاملFinite-time Thermodynamics and Simulated Annealing
Finite-time thermodynamics is the extension of traditional reversible thermodynamics to include the extra requirement that the process in question goes to completion in a specified finite length of time. As such it is by definition a branch of irreversible thermodynamics, but unlike most other versions of irreversible thermodynamics, finite-time thermodynamics does not require or assume any kno...
متن کاملEmergence of Thermodynamics from Darwinian Dynamics
Darwinian dynamics is manifestly stochastic and nonconservative, but has a profound connection to conservative dynamics in physics. In this short presentation the main ideas and logical steps leading to thermodynamics from Darwinian dynamics are discussed in a quantitative manner. It suggests that the truth of the second law of thermodynamics lies in the fact that stochasticity or probability i...
